Product Description

Happy Neuron's product games work similarly to all other brain training games.  They offer various cognitive training games that focus on skills like short term spatial memory and visual attention span.  However, essentially all their games can be broken down into five categories: memory games, attention games, language games, executive function games, and visual-spatial games.

Personal Review
The first brain training game I have reviewed is Happy Neuron. Happy Neuron’s main selling point of its brain training games are games for a reasonable rate. As of June 16, 2008, it has a free trial basis followed up by a service charging $9.99 a month on a month to month plan. To further bolster its credibility, you are also able to cancel at anytime (if on the month to month plan) without fear of being locked into a longer term contract.

I approached this game with great excitement as it was my first review.   My first thought after logging-in was the initial screen has a ton of options.   In my opinion, too many as it makes it a little difficult trying to figure out what everything means and how to exactly begin.   However, once past this minor hurdle, I was able to settle on a balanced game and played two games.

After having played several of their games, I came away with a few opinions and insights.  I do believe the games challenge you mentally and could help you improve your memory over time.  One game in particular, Heraldry, requires you to remember the shape, color, design and emblem of a coat of arms.  The game works as follows: (1) you get to see the coat of arms for a several seconds and it vanishes from your screen, (2) you then are given a random exercise to do such as alphabetically order a list of random words, and (3) finally, you are asked to recreate the coat of arms you originally saw.  Based on this game in particular, I could quickly see how it called upon my memory skills and required me to concentrate harder on certain aspects.  Naturally, over time I could see how this training could improve your visual concentration and memory for details.

The other games varied in their complexity as some games I played were very easy to me and others were far more challenging.  Nonetheless, I did find that there were some things that stood out about their games and program as a whole:

Pros

  • I believe several of their games are good brain training and can improve your memory skills.
  • There is a huge variety of games to choose from.  Something for everyone.
  • You get to see how you score compares to others on their system.
  • Price is very inexpensive and can cancel at anytime on the month to month plan.

Cons

  • No sound to the games I played.  Everything was visual only.
  • Navigation was very troublesome.  Hard to move from page to page.
  • Initial starting screen provides too many options. Fewer options would work better and provide better overall training.
  • Slow loading of certain pages.  Causes you to fear scores won’t register.

Final Analysis

Happy Neuron is good game for someone who is looking for a value alternative to brain training.  Unfortunately, this value comes at a price where other features, such as sound and a more interactive system are lacking.  In the coming year, it will be interesting to see what changes they make to their product to make it more user-friendly.  I do believe they are on to something here and look forward to seeing their future updates.  if you would like to purchase the game, you can visit through the following link: http://www.happy-neuron.com.
