Memory Games

Memory games or brain training games offer the promise of being able to help improve one’s memory and focus.  Early studies of some games seem to suggest that they can do just that.  For example, the IMPACT study performed at the Mayo Clinic showed that one brain training game was able to see an improvement on average in test subjects of memory equivalent to 10 years.  This is amazing news as it shows that certain people can improve their memory.

However, this finding is just the beginning as many people also believe that using quality memory games on a consistent basis can also help stave off cognitive decline.  This is of particular importance to all those who worry that they could become susceptible to common mental illnesses including Alzheimer’s and dementia.  Most have heard of the benefits of doing crossword puzzles or Sudoku puzzles or learning a second language.  The brain training games aim to take those concepts to a whole new level.  In fact, these games are based on new developing science called neuroplasticity.  This science is based on the concept that the brain change.  The thinking being that the brain can build new neurons through certain activities.  These memory games work to build these neurons for memory improvement, improved focus and other mental applications.

Of course, the problem is that not all brain training games are made equal.  Some games are not true brain training games at all as some have been built specifically for entertainment purposes and not on these scientific principles.  These are the games built by companies like Nintendo® and these are the ones that people should avoid as they are not based on any scientific research.  However, there are a couple of companies that people should focus on.  The two most well known companies are Posit Science and Lumosity.  Posit Science was developed by Dr. Michael Merzenich.  He is the man behind the new discipline neuroplasticy.  It was his ground breaking studies that had turned conventional science on its head.  His move into brain training games is designed to help turn these scientific concepts into practical applications.
